July 6 – 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
UNIgreen’s JRC1 – Biochemistry & Biotechnology Webinar Series: Episode 7
Topic
Perspective on aligning drug design with One Health principles
This webinar will explore how drug design can be reimagined through a One Health approach, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Participants will gain insights into developing safer, more sustainable pharmaceuticals that address global health challenges while minimizing environmental impact and reducing the risk of antimicrobial resistance. Through expert perspectives and real-world examples, the session will highlight innovative strategies for integrating health, sustainability, and responsible innovation throughout the drug development process.

When?
On Monday, 6 July 2026, join us for an online event, from 11:00 to 12:00 CEST with an expert speaker, Maria Paola Costi from UNIMORE and partake in engaging discussions regarding molecular mechanisms!
Speaker
Prof. Maria Paola Costi
Drug Discovery and Biotechnology Lab, Department of Life Science at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia
Prof. Maria Paola Costi completed her PhD in Medicinal chemistry from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE)/Milan/Trieste in 1989; visiting scientist at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF); Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the Department of Life Science at UNIMORE; Director of the Master in Biopharmaceuticals; group leader of the laboratory of Drug discovery and biotechnology. Member of the European Science Foundation (ESF) College of experts. She published about 200 articles and book chapters in international journals, 21 patents serving as an editorial board member of some international journals. Her research focuses on the discovery of anticancer and antiparasitic agents targeting the folate dependent enzymes and Hippo pathway (TEAD proteins). She has a long-standing collaboration with the MITO group for translational research in clinical trials. MPC has been working in the field of antinfective agents for over 25 years and recently she was engaged in OneHealth topics in medicinal chemistry. She has coordinated over 30 projects. Among these, the most relevant are granted by the EU, Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC) and national Italian projects. She is now coordinating the COST Action CA21111.
Her main fields are medicinal chemistry/chemical biology and proteomics/biophysical analysis to support the mechanism of reaction and in vivo activity of diseases targeted compounds.
