SUMMARY:"Climate-Friendly Parks" as urban practice
DESCRIPTION:UNIgreen’s JRC4 – Biodiversity\, Forestry\, and Agroecology Webinar Series: Episode 5 \n\n\n\nThis event\, organized within the UNIgreen JRC4 Living Lab framework\, brings together researchers\, students\, and forest practitioners to discuss aliens and flames – when fire ecology meets invasion ecology. \n\n\n\nThematic\n\n\n\nThis seminar presents a case-study of natural restoration intervention carried out in the “Marco Biagi” Park in Reggio Emilia (Italy)\, within the LIFE CityAdap3 project. The study quantifies ecosystem services provided by an urban green area enriched with multiple landscape elements\, offering a replicable model of urban restoration. Four types of NBS are analyzed: two micro-forests\, rural edges\, tree rows\, and a constructed wetland. The micro-forests were established following the Miyawaki method\, using both native and Mediterranean-adapted species. Preliminary results from two years of monitoring (2024–2025) highlight differences in biodiversity\, structure\, and ecosystem functioning among the interventions. The study also evaluates microclimatic mitigation by comparing green and built-up areas. \n\n\n\nWhen?\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, 31 March 2026\, join us for an online event\, from 14:00 to 15:00 CEST with expert speaker and engaging discussions. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\nWho should join?\n\n\n\nResearchers\, students\, forest managers\, and anyone curious about forest ecology and sustainability. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGiulia Santunione\n\n\n\nResearcher at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia \n\n\n\n\n\nGiulia Santunione is a researcher in Environmental and Applied Botany at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy). SUMMARY:Trichilogaster: the story of a gall wasp that crossed hemispheres to control an invasive wattle
DESCRIPTION:UNIgreen’s JRC4 – Biodiversity\, Forestry\, and Agroecology Webinar Series: Episode 6 \n\n\n\nThis event\, organized within the UNIgreen JRC4 Living Lab framework\, brings together researchers\, students\, and forest practitioners to discuss. \n\n\n\nThematic\n\n\n\nTrichilogaster acaciaelongifoliae (Hymenopterae: Pteromalidae) was the first biocontrol agent intentionally introduced against an invasive alien plant in more recent times in continental Europe. This small wasp promotes the formation of galls at flower and vegetative buds of the target plant\, Acacia longifolia (Fabaceae)\, whichis one of the most widespread invasive plants along coastal areas in Portugal. The wasp was introduced in Portugal in 2015 and is now established along the coast\, from the most northern location to the most southern region. Trichilogaster acaciaelongifoliae is promoting significant reductions of seed production and vegetative growth. No galls were found on non-target species. The results so far are encouraging for the management of A. longifolia\, confirming the specificity and efficacy of the agent. \n\n\n\nWhen?\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, 14 April 2026\, join us for an online event\, from 14:00 to 15:00 CEST with expert speaker and engaging discussions. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\nWho should join?\n\n\n\nResearchers\, students\, forest managers\, and anyone curious about forest ecology and sustainability. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHélia Marchante\n\n\n\nBiologist and lecturer at the College of Agriculture\, within the Polytechnic University of Coimbra \n\n\n\n\n\nAs a biologist\, my research is centered on the ecological dynamics of invasive alien plants and classical biological control. SUMMARY:Climate Change and the New Era of Fire in the Iberian Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:UNIgreen’s JRC4 – Biodiversity\, Forestry\, and Agroecology Webinar Series: Episode 8 \n\n\n\nThis event\, organized within the UNIgreen JRC4 Living Lab framework\, brings together researchers\, students\, and forest practitioners to discuss aliens and flames – when fire ecology meets invasion ecology. \n\n\n\nThematic\n\n\n\nThis seminar explores Heat\, Fuel Loads\, and Landscapes in Transformation. \n\n\n\nClimate change is significantly transforming the relationship between fire\, vegetation\, and the landscape on the Iberian Peninsula. Rising temperatures\, more severe droughts\, heat waves\, and increasing water stress on vegetation are creating conditions that are increasingly conducive to high-intensity wildfires. Added to this is the accumulation of plant fuel resulting from rural depopulation\, the loss of traditional agro-pastoral practices\, and the progressive homogenization of the landscape. In this context\, fire can no longer be understood solely as an isolated emergency\, but rather as the result of a broader transformation of the climate and the landscape. Therefore\, effective prevention requires a shift toward active landscape management\, the restoration of mosaic landscape structures\, the reduction of fuel continuity\, and the adaptation of territorial strategies to a new ecological and climatic reality. \n\n\n\nWhen?\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, 20 Ocotber 2026\, join us for an online event\, from 12:00 to 13:00 CEST with expert speaker and engaging discussions. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\nWho should join?\n\n\n\nResearchers\, students\, forest managers\, and anyone curious about forest ecology and sustainability. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJosé Carlos Piñar\n\n\n\nSpanish biologist\, researcher\, and university lecturer specializing in conservation biology at University of Almería \n\n\n\n\n\nDriven from an early age by a desire to understand how the natural world works\, he discovered his passion for biology at university\, a fascination that would ultimately shape his academic and professional career. \n\n\n\nHe earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Jaén in 2011\, followed by a Master’s degree in the Management of Biological Resources in the Natural Environment in 2016. In 2023\, he completed an internationally recognized PhD in Earth and Environmental Science and Technology. Since 2024\, he has also worked as a lecturer at Universidad Internacional de la Empresa (UNIE). \n\n\n\nThroughout his career\, Piñar Fuentes has developed a strong international research profile. He has an H-index of 14 and has published 41 research articles in high-impact international journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports’ Science Citation Index. He has also authored nine chapters in national and international books\, presented 15 contributions at scientific conferences\, and participated as a collaborating researcher in two R&D&I projects. He is currently a member of the RNM-344 Conservation Biology Research Group. \n\n\n\nHis research encompasses conservation biology\, Andalusian flora and vegetation\, climate change\, experimental science education\, species distribution and ecological niche modelling\, landscape eco-restoration\, and threatened flora. \n\n\n\nBehind these achievements lies a profound personal vocation. Piñar Fuentes fell in love with biology from the very beginning\, inspired by the possibility of discovering how our environment functions. The guidance of exceptional professors\, mentors\, and fellow researchers later allowed him to deepen his knowledge of botany and continue growing as a scientist. Today\, he considers himself fortunate to work in the field he loves\, maintaining the same curiosity and enthusiasm that inspired him as a child. \n\n\n\nHis scientific ambition is both intellectual and human: to communicate the excitement of science to others\, inspire new generations\, and continue conducting research that contributes even in a small but meaningful way to our collective understanding of the natural world.

SUMMARY:Evaluating the Role of Evolutionary Processes in the Diversification of Lineages within Asteraceae from Tropical High-Elevation Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:UNIgreen’s JRC4 – Biodiversity\, Forestry\, and Agroecology Webinar Series: Episode 9 \n\n\n\nThis event\, organized within the UNIgreen JRC4 Living Lab framework\, brings together researchers\, students\, and forest practitioners to discuss aliens and flames – when fire ecology meets invasion ecology. \n\n\n\nThematic\n\n\n\nThis seminar explores Tropical high elevation ecosystems are hotspots of species diversity and endemism\, with the majority of plant diversity sharing a recent origin on an evolutionary scale. The outstanding accumulation of plant diversity in these regions over a short period of time has often been explained by the availability of new habitats\, niche differentiation and the influence of geological and climatic changes in the connection and isolation of populations. \n\n\n\nAsteraceae\, one of the most diverse plant groups in tropical high elevation hotspots\, is a great study system to characterise diversity patterns and determine the main evolutionary processes responsible for plant diversity in these regions. Additionally\, the combination of genomic\, ecological and morphological data with approaches in phylogenomics\, population genomics\, demographic modelling and lineage differentiation analyses open the door to the study of evolutionary processes at both the species and population levels. Three Asteraceae genera Oritrophium\, Senecio and Dendrosenecio were studied with the aim of extending the knowledge about current diversity and diversification processes behind recently evolved plant groups from tropical high elevation regions. Phylogenomic analyses revealed a recent evolution of the studied plant groups\, which evolved after tropical high elevation ecosystems emerged and subsequently diversified likely influenced by Pleistocene climatic oscillations. \n\n\n\nPhylogenetic patterns were congruent with the geographic distribution of species\, but gene tree and cytonuclear discordances were found in all groups. However\, each group showed a different evolutionary history with links between habitat transitions and morphological traits that resembling a pattern of convergent adaptive evolution to habitat; ecologically-based speciation promoted by fine-scale habitat differences in mountainous regions; or lineage differentiation supporting heterogeneous divergence trajectories across the speciation continuum. \n\n\n\nWhen?\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, 17 November 2026\, join us for an online event\, from 12:00 to 13:00 CET with expert speaker and engaging discussions. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\nWho should join?\n\n\n\nResearchers\, students\, forest managers\, and anyone curious about forest ecology and sustainability. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJuan Manuel Gorospe\n\n\n\nPosdoctoral researcher at the Conservation Biology Research Group – RNM-344\, University of Almería \n\n\n\n\n\nHe obtained his PhD in Botany at Charles University in Prague\, Czechia. He has participated in projects and carried out research collaborations with academic institutions in Spain\, Czechia\, Norway\, Ecuador\, Peru\, Germany\, Austria and Chile. His research is centered in the study and conservation of plant diversity and has contributed to research fields such as landscape analysis\, conservation biology\, evolutionary biology\, experimental biology\, and biogeography. His scientific work employs a multidisciplinary perspective that combines genomic\, ecological and morphological approaches to understand which evolutionary processes gave rise to current diversity patterns.
