SUMMARY:RE:VIVE Europe: Rethinking Low-Density Territories\, Inspiring Big Futures
DESCRIPTION:The programme will take place in Oliveira do Hospital\, at Oliveira do Hospital School of Technology and Management (ESTGOH)\, part of the Polytechnic University of Coimbra\, and will be taught entirely in English. \n\n\n\nRE:VIVE Europe was designed to explore the viability of low-density territories as drivers of sustainable development\, innovation and territorial cohesion. The initiative proposes an integrated approach\, combining academic reflection\, immersion in the territory and collaborative work\, challenging participants to answer the central question: “Low-density territories and their surrounding areas: how to design the future of these territories?“ \n\n\n\nThe focus is mainly on regions associated with small towns (with less than 25\,000 inhabitants)\, which are often faced with structural challenges such as progressive depopulation\, demographic ageing\, the fragility of basic services and distance from decision-making centres. The programme argues\, however\, that these territories represent unique opportunities for alternative models of development\, where tradition can coexist with creativity and innovation. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nLanguage: English \n\n\n\nDates of physical mobility: 27 April to 1 May 2026\n\n\n\nLocation: Polytechnic University of Coimbra (Portugal)\n\n\n\nVirtual Mobility Dates: 13 and 17 April 2026\n\n\n\nNumber of ECTS: 4\n\n\n\nMaximum number of participants: UNIgreen Alliance\, 5 Students & 2 Teachers per institution \n\n\n\n\nWho?\n\n\n\nUNIgreen Alliance Students & Teachers are required to be able to communicate fluently in English\, although no formal certification is required. \n\n\n\nSubject\n\n\n\nRE:VIVE Europe encourages participants to develop strategic and spatial proposals aligned with five main objectives: \n\n\n\n\nTerritorial revitalisation and resilience\n\n\n\nValorisation of resources\n\n\n\nIdeas for planning and public policies\n\n\n\nCreative solutions\n\n\n\nEuropean models of sustainability\n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nThe programme consists of an intensive course combining classes\, workshops\, multidisciplinary teamwork\, and field activities. \n\n\n\nThe programme also includes: \n\n\n\n\n5 lunches and 2 dinners and tasting of regional products\n\n\n\n\n\nTerritorial immersion tours\, exploring natural heritage\, biodiversity\, landscapes of high scenic value\, cultural heritage\, historic buildings\, archaeological sites\, intangible traditions and sporting activities.\n\n\n\n\nParticipation is free of charge. SUMMARY:Trichilogaster: the story of a gall wasp that crossed hemispheres to control an invasive wattle
DESCRIPTION:UNIgreen’s JRC4 – Biodiversity\, Forestry\, and Agroecology Webinar Series: Episode 6 \n\n\n\nThis event\, organized within the UNIgreen JRC4 Living Lab framework\, brings together researchers\, students\, and forest practitioners to discuss. \n\n\n\nThematic\n\n\n\nTrichilogaster acaciaelongifoliae (Hymenopterae: Pteromalidae) was the first biocontrol agent intentionally introduced against an invasive alien plant in more recent times in continental Europe. This small wasp promotes the formation of galls at flower and vegetative buds of the target plant\, Acacia longifolia (Fabaceae)\, whichis one of the most widespread invasive plants along coastal areas in Portugal. The wasp was introduced in Portugal in 2015 and is now established along the coast\, from the most northern location to the most southern region. Trichilogaster acaciaelongifoliae is promoting significant reductions of seed production and vegetative growth. No galls were found on non-target species. The results so far are encouraging for the management of A. longifolia\, confirming the specificity and efficacy of the agent. \n\n\n\nWhen?\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, 14 April 2026\, join us for an online event\, from 14:00 to 15:00 CEST with expert speaker and engaging discussions. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\nWho should join?\n\n\n\nResearchers\, students\, forest managers\, and anyone curious about forest ecology and sustainability. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHélia Marchante\n\n\n\nBiologist and lecturer at the College of Agriculture\, within the Polytechnic University of Coimbra \n\n\n\n\n\nAs a biologist\, my research is centered on the ecological dynamics of invasive alien plants and classical biological control. I hold a position as a lecturer at the College of Agriculture\, within the Polytechnic University of Coimbra. I am actively involved in research activities at CERNAS (Research Centre for Natural Resources\, Environment\, and Society). Here\, my focus remains on invasive plants\, encompassing various aspects such as impact assessment\, management strategies for invaded areas\, and exploration of biological control methods\, among other topics. Beyond academia\, I engage in consultancy work\, collaborating with diverse stakeholders. My involvement extends to science communication efforts\, promoting environmental awareness\, and spearheading citizen science projects\, all with a dedicated emphasis on invasive plant species. Furthermore\, I am a co-founder of the citizen science platform\, Invasoras.pt\, which serves as a resource for facilitating public participation in the monitoring and management of invasive plant species in Portugal.

SUMMARY:Enter Study Days 2026 at AUP
DESCRIPTION:ENTER Study Days\, “European education in transition: Digitalization\, Internationalization and Innovation” will take place in Plovdiv\,  Bulgaria from 9 to 11 March 2026. The objective is to obtain a global vision of the work done and to plan the future activities of the Alliance. \n\n\n\nThe event brought together representatives of Work Package 6 and international partners. In line with the domain of UNIgreen and the activities of WP6 the keynote speakers introduced techniques for Integrating the green and sustainability aspects in the teaching programmes (Prof. Vladislav Popov\, Agricultural University of Plovdiv) methods for flexibilization of teacher training curricula (Ms. Marjolein Wallenaar\, Aeres University of Applied Sciences Wageningen\, Netherlands)\, and teachers’ sustainability competencies (Eveliina Asikainen\, Tampere University of Applied Sciences\, Finland)\, as well as current Sustainability Practices in Higher Education (Ms. María del Pilar Casado Belmonte\, University of Almeria\, Spain). During the event\, a tree planting initiative took place. On the second day of the event\, the participants visited the private company Opora Back Yard\, whose fields are used to demonstrate good practices for students\, research activities\, and cooperation with the academic community and to conduct student internships. \n\n\n\nSubject\n\n\n\nIn a rapidly changing world\, teacher education in agricultural and environmental fields holds unique potential to shape a more sustainable and resilient future. As our world faces social\, environmental\, and digital transitions\, there is an urgent need to reimagine how we prepare educators – not only with knowledge\, but with the tools to inspire\, engage\, and reflect.  \n\n\n\nToday’s teacher training is called to respond to evolving learner needs. Programs play a key role to activate curiosity\, foster critical thinking\, and reflect European values such as inclusion\, democracy\, and sustainability. Education for sustainable development (ESD) is no longer a niche – it is a necessity. To meet this need\, curricula need to become more flexible\, personalized\, and connected to real-world challenges.Digitalization opens new possibilities for engaging learners\, while internationalization enriches perspectives and broadens horizons. \n\n\n\nDesigning attractive study programs means aligning educational content with purpose and relevance in order to motivate a new generation of teachers to start their careers in the field of agricultural and environmental education. The ENTER Study Days 2026 offer a shared space to explore how we can build teacher education programs that are not only academically sound\, but socially meaningful: programs that empower educators to become change-agents in a world that urgently needs them. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\nDeadline is 28 February 2026 \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nDay 1\n\n\n9:00 – 9:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration of participants and morning coffee \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9:30 – 10:00 \n\n\n\n\n\nOpening and welcome speeches \n\n\n\n\nAssoc. SUMMARY:Aliens and Flames - When Fire Ecology Meets Invasion Ecology
DESCRIPTION:UNIgreen’s JRC4 – Biodiversity\, Forestry\, and Agroecology Webinar Series: Episode 4 \n\n\n\nThis event\, organized within the UNIgreen JRC4 Living Lab framework\, brings together researchers\, students\, and forest practitioners to discuss aliens and flames – when fire ecology meets invasion ecology. \n\n\n\nThematic\n\n\n\nIt is widely known that plant invaders normally benefit from disturbance. Fire is one of the best examples of this relationship. \n\n\n\nThe relation between fire and invasive plants can be bi-directional when fire promotes plant invasions and these promote fire\, leading to a feedback loop that is in many cases hard to break. \n\n\n\nHere we explore this relationship using examples mostly from Portugal and other mediterranean-type regions. Given the changes in climate\, this topic is also relevant for countries and regions where fire occurrence is expected to increase in the future.  \n\n\n\nWhen?\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, 24 February\, 2026\, join us for an online event\, from 14:00 to 15:00 CET with expert speaker and engaging discussions. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\nWho should join?\n\n\n\nResearchers\, students\, forest managers\, and anyone curious about forest ecology and sustainability. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoaquim Sande Silva\n\n\n\nProfessor at Polytechnic University of Coimbra \n\n\n\n\n\nJoaquim Sande Silva holds a BSc and a PhD in Forestry from the University of Lisbon\, and a Master’s degree in Environment and Renewable Resources from the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM)\, Greece. \n\n\n\nHe is Professor at the Polytechnic University of Coimbra\, Portugal\, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in fire ecology and fire management. He has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Bari\, Italy (2019\, 2022\, and 2025). \n\n\n\nHe has led or currently leads six nationally funded research projects and has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed articles indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases\, primarily in forest ecology\, invasion ecology\, and fire ecology. In addition\, he has authored over 190 non-indexed publications\, including conference proceedings\, book chapters\, and technical reports\, and has served as editor of six books. He has served on six national scientific expert panels on forest fires\, appointed by the Portuguese Government and the Portuguese Parliament. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the environmental NGO League for the Protection of Nature (LPN) and a member of the Portuguese Society for Forest Science.
