SUMMARY:Biodiversity and Ecosystem eScience Conference (BEeS) 2026
DESCRIPTION:LifeWatch ERIC Biodiversity and Ecosystem eScience Conference (BEeS) is back! \n\n\n\nThis summer\, we are pleased to invite you to Plovdiv\, Bulgaria\, for a four-day event\, from 7 to 10 July. BEeS is LifeWatch ERIC’s flagship forum for eScience in biodiversity and ecosystem research\, emphasising interoperable data\, reproducible workflows\, and reusable digital services. \n\n\n\nLifeWatch Bulgaria hosts the 2026 edition of the conference at the Agricultural University-Plovdiv. Bulgaria joined LifeWatch ERIC in 2022 as one of its eight Distributed Centres. The event also showcases how LifeWatch ERIC services and communities support collaboration across the infrastructure. \n\n\n\nBEeS 2026 will bring together scientists\, experts\, and innovators to explore challenges and emerging opportunities in biodiversity and ecosystem science. Through a series of high-level plenary sessions\, the conference will address critical topics including biodiversity conservation and species extinction\, ecosystem responses to climate change\, the role of agroecology in sustainable systems\, and the latest frontiers in eScience technologies. \n\n\n\nThe programme is complemented by thematic sessions aligned with LifeWatch ERIC Thematic Service Working Groups\, focusing on practical methods\, workflows\, and service-enabled science. \n\n\n\nThis event promotes dialogue across disciplines and highlights the importance of integrating ecological knowledge\, technological innovation\, and policy frameworks\, acting as a platform to explore collaborative solutions for understanding\, protecting\, and managing biodiversity. A key aim is to accelerate uptake of decision-relevant evidence products that are transparent\, traceable\, and comparable across regions. \n\n\n\nPrelimity Programme\n\n\n\nDay 1\n\n\n14:30 – 15:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n15:30 – 16:15 \n\n\n\n\n\nPre-conference demo/hands-on session \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n16:15 – 17:15 \n\n\n\n\n\nPre-conference workshop/training session \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n17:15 – 18:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome Drinks \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDay 2\n\n\n08:00 – 09:00 \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration and drop off of presentations \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n09:00 – 11:00 \n\n\n\n\n\nContributed session \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:00 – 11:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nCoffee break  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:30 – 11:45 \n\n\n\n\n\nOpening and institutional welcome \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:45 – 12:45 \n\n\n\n\n\nPlenary – Biodiversity conservation: preventing flora and fauna from extinction – Prof. Tatyana Bileva (Agricultural University-Plovdiv)\, Prof. Dessislava Dimitrova (Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12:45 – 13:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nLifeWatch ERIC Masterclass \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n13:30 – 14:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nLunch break \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n14:30 – 15:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nTraining sessions (parallel) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n15:30 – 16:15 \n\n\n\n\n\nPlenary – Biodiversity and ecosystem responses to climate change – Prof. Carl Beierkuhnlein (University of Bayreuth\, University of Granada) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n16:15 – 17:15  \n\n\n\n\n\nTraining sessions (parallel) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n17:30 – 18:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nGuided tour in Plovdiv \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDay 3\n\n\n08:00 – 09:00 \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration and drop off of presentations \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n09:00 – 11:00 \n\n\n\n\n\nContributed session \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:00 – 11:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nCoffee break  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:30 – 12:15 \n\n\n\n\n\nPlenary – Agroecology – Prof. Vladislav Popov (Agricultural University-Plovdiv) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12:15 – 13:00 \n\n\n\n\n\nLifeWatch ERIC Masterclass \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n13:00 – 14:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nLunch break \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n14:30 – 15:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nTraining sessions (parallel) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n15:30 – 16:15 \n\n\n\n\n\nPlenary: New frontiers for eScience technologies – Dr. Anne Fouilloux (LifeWatch ERIC) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n16:15 – 17:15 \n\n\n\n\n\nTraining sessions (parallel) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n17:15 – 18:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nDocumentary Projection \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n19:30/20:00 \n\n\n\n\n\nSocial Dinner \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDay 4\n\n\n08:00 – 09:00 \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration and drop off of presentations \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n09:00 – 11:00 \n\n\n\n\n\nContributed session \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:00 – 11:30 \n\n\n\n\n\nCoffee break  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:30 – 12:15 \n\n\n\n\n\nLifeWatch ERIC Masterclass \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12:15 – 13:00 \n\n\n\n\n\nRound table and Closing \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlennary Sessions\n\nAgroecology | Presenter: Prof. Vladislav Popov (Agricultural University-Plovdiv)\n\n\n\nBiodiversity and ecosystem responses to climate change | Presenter: Prof. Carl Beierkuhnlein (University of Bayreuth and University of Granada)\n\n\n\nBiodiversity conservation: preventing flora and fauna from extinction | Presenter: Prof. Tatyana Bileva\, Prof. Dessislava Dimitrova (Agricultural University-Plovdiv)\n\n\n\nNew frontiers for eScience technologies | Presenter: Dr. Anne Fouilloux (LifeWatch ERIC)\n\n\n\n\n\nContributed Sessions\n\nUniting science for human\, animal\, plant and ecosystem health\n\n\n\nMetagenomics and eDNA for biodiversity and ecosystems\n\n\n\nAnimal traits\, behavior and bio-tracking\n\n\n\nBiodiversity observatories and environmental monitoring\n\n\n\nHabitat mapping\n\n\n\nBiogeography: biodiversity conservation across regions and ecosystems\n\n\n\nBiodiversity and ecosystem responses to climate change\n\n\n\nRestoration of our oceans and waters\n\n\n\nTaxonomic data services\n\n\n\nSemantics and data curation for biodiversity and ecosystem research\n\n\n\nSoil mission & Microbiology\n\n\n\nAgroecology\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Apply?\n\n\n\nYou can register for BEeS 2026 by completing the form below. \n\n\n\n\nRegistration Form\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that this form also collects your interest in the following: \n\n\n\n\nOptional Activities (at your own expense)\n\nGuided Tour – 8 July:A city tour of Plovdiv lasting about one hour\, taking place after the conference.Estimated cost: €10-15 per person.\n\n\n\nSocial Dinner – 9 July:The dinner will take place between 19:30-20:00 (TBC).Estimated cost: TBC.\n\n\n\n\n\nAccommodation OpportunityThe Agricultural University-Plovdiv offers reduced-fee accommodation for Early Career Researchers (within 7 years of PhD completion).Estimated cost: €36 per person.\n\n\n\n\nFurther details regarding the social dinner\, guided tour\, and accommodation will be shared soon on this website. \n\n\n\nRegistration deadline: 15 May \n\n\n\nRegistration will remain open after this date; however\, we may not be able to guarantee access to the optional activities and accommodation listed above.

SUMMARY:Design with Water: Water as a Resource in the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Design with Water is an immersive summer school course that explores how water can be a driving force in shaping landscapes. Set in the unique Icelandic environment\, the course brings together students interested in landscape architecture\, environmental sciences\, planning\, and related disciplines to engage with real‑world challenges of climate change\, urban hydrology\, and nature‑based design. \n\n\n\nThrough hands‑on studio work\, field observations\, lectures\, and site visits\, participants will work collaboratively to develop a plan for a river landscape\, integrating Blue‑Green Infrastructure (BGI) and Nature‑Based Solutions. The course combines theory and practice\, offering direct exposure to contemporary projects and an ongoing European‑funded BGI initiative as an open laboratory. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nLanguage: English\n\n\n\nDates of physical mobility: 3 to 10 August 2026\n\n\n\nLocation: Agricultural University of Iceland (Iceland)\n\n\n\nVirtual Mobility Dates: coming soon\n\n\n\nNumber of ECTS: 3\n\n\n\nMaximum number of participants: 30\n\n\n\n\nTarget Participants\n\n\n\nThe Summer School is a multidisciplinary international programme open to students pursuing a bachelor’s\, master’s\, or doctoral degree in environmental design disciplines\, art\, architecture\, environmental sciences\, and related fields. \n\n\n\nSubject\n\n\n\nThe concept of Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) is rapidly gaining traction\, positioning itself as a cornerstone of modern planning. As cities worldwide grapple with the dual challenges of rapid expansion and the escalating threats of climate change\, the need for sustainable and resilient water management has never been more critical. Increased impervious surfaces lead to higher runoff volumes\, overwhelming conventional drainage systems and exacerbating flood risks. Simultaneously\, environmental demands on water systems\, ranging from ecological health to resource sustainability\, are becoming increasingly complex. Blue-Green Infrastructure and Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) offer a paradigm shift\, moving beyond traditional “grey” infrastructure (pipes\, pumps\, concrete) to integrate natural processes into the urban fabric. BGI provides multi-functional benefits\, including: \n\n\n\n\nFlood Mitigation: Enhancing infiltration and water storage (e.g.\, green roofs\, permeable pavements\, rain gardens).\n\n\n\nWater Quality Improvement: Filtering pollutants through soil and vegetation.\n\n\n\nBiodiversity Enhancement: Creating habitats within the living areas.\n\n\n\nUrban Cooling: Providing shade and evaporative cooling.\n\n\n\nImproved Public Health: Creating attractive\, accessible public spaces.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nAugust 2nd\nArrival of participants in Hvanneyri \n\n\n\n\nAugust 3rd\n\nWelcoming\n\n\n\nExploring the area\, Hvanneyri and Andakilsá\n\n\n\n\n\nAugust 4th\n\nShort presentations in the morning – Examples of architectural projects related to Water\n\n\n\nGroups – Workshop\, studio work in the afternoon\n\n\n\n\n\nAugust 5th\n\nFieldtrip to Grundarfjordur\, Snæfelsness peninsula\n\n\n\n\n\nAugust 6th\n\nShort presentations in the morning\n\n\n\nWorkshop\, studio work in the afternoon\n\n\n\n\n\nAugust 7th\n\nField trip to Reykjavik\, downtown (freetime)\n\n\n\nDavid Finger BGI and Environmental Engineering\n\n\n\n\n\nAugust 8th\n\nShort presentations in the morning\n\n\n\nWorkshop\, studio work in the afternoon\n\n\n\n\n\nAugust 9th\n\nShort presentations in the morning\n\n\n\nWorkshop\, studio work in the afternoon\, finalizing work\n\n\n\nLate afternoon trip to waterfalls and thermal bath (relax time)\n\n\n\n\n\nAugust 10th\n\nFinalizing works in the morning\n\n\n\nProject presentations after lunch\n\n\n\nGoodbye\n\n\n\n\n\nAugust 11th\nDepartures \n\n\n\n\nHow to Apply\n\n\n\nFor any questions or expressions of interest\, you may contact: Lukáš Pospíšil (lukas@lbhi.is). “If you need more information\, click here. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\nDeadline for admission is 30 April 2026.
