SUMMARY:Scientific Mission: Biocrust Mapping in Iceland using Remote Sensing
DESCRIPTION:UNIgreen’s JRC8 – Responsible Governance\, Land Use\, and Climate Change – Scientific Mission \n\n\n\nWho?\n\n\n\nResearchers and PhD students of UNIgreen Alliance universities.  Participants should have a PhD (e.g.\, postdocs or faculty) or be in and advanced stage of their PhD studies\, working on topics related to the SM. \n\n\n\nObjectives \n\n\n\n\nIntensification of academic exchange by enhancing access to advanced research resources\n\n\n\nFacilitation of mobility for academics and doctoral students \n\n\n\nEstablishing international scientific networks among participants \n\n\n\nImproving research quality through knowledge exchange \n\n\n\nAdvancing UNIgreen towards becoming a collaborative community focused on innovation and sustainability \n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\nDay 1: Arrival of participants\, registration\, icebreaker.  \n\n\n\nDay 2: Potential of biocrust development for ecological restoration and climate-change resilience in Iceland and similar environments. Visit to reclaimed site under restoration\, near Borgarnes.  \n\n\n\nDay 3: Mapping of biocrust\, bare ground and vegetation cover with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)\, in five selected sites where biocrust have developed as a result of a restoration practice (e.g.\, fertilization); and in reference sites where biocrust have developed without assistance.  \n\n\n\nDay 4: Planning of dates and strategy for: \n\ndata analysis\, \n\n\n\nfurther data collection\, \n\n\n\nwriting of manuscript\,\n\n\n\nresearch proposal. Verification of competences.  \n\n\n\n\n\nDay 5: Group photo\, certificates\, departure of participants \n\n\n\n\nTopics of Training\n\n\n\nBuilding capacity for ecological restoration and climate-change resilience.  \n\n\n\n\nSoil/biocrust biology\n\n\n\nRemote sensing\n\n\n\nEcological restoration\n\n\n\nClimate change \n\n\n\n\nWho can apply?\n\n\n\nScientists employed by the UNIgreen Alliance Universities or persons completing their doctoral studies at the UNIgreen Alliance Universities\, with \n\n\n\n\nAt least CEFR B2 English language proficiency\n\n\n\n\n\nAt least EQF level 7 of education in the subject area: Health or Agronomy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\nApplication deadline: 20 March 2026.
