Professor Stefan Shilev
Head of Department of Microbiology & environmental biotechnologies
Agricultural University – Plovdiv and WP3 member
He graduated from the Agricultural University – Plovdiv with a degree in Plant Protection. He started his academic career in 1998 as an assistant professor at the Department of Microbiology & Environmental Biotechnologies. He completed his PhD in Microbiology at the University of Córdoba (Spain) in 2003, and his postdoctoral research in bacterial proteomics was conducted during 2007-2008 at the same university. The academic positions “associate professor” and “professor” were held in 2010 and 2023, respectively. He was the Bulgarian team coordinator of 7 international projects [Horizon (Suwanu, Suwanu Europe, Crop-Matching) and Erasmus+ (BOOST)], NATO CLG) and coordinator of 4 projects, among others, financed by the Bulgarian national science fund. His research interests are in the field of environmental and agricultural microbiology, circular agriculture and bioeconomy, and the recycling of organic materials. During his career, he held various university positions, as President of the General Assembly of the Agricultural University – Plovdiv and Director of Master courses in the Faculty of Plant Protection and Agroecology. In addition, he held various public positions – Director of the Regional inspection of environment and waters of Plovdiv district, Director of Ecology and waste management department in the Municipality of Plovdiv, member of the Bulgarian parliament, and currently Plovdiv municipality councilor.
