Beyond the Job Title with Carmen Ruiz Caballero

How did you get to where you are today?

I studied Audiovisual Communication and worked as a photographer and video creator for a local council. When I finished my degree, I was very interested in developing a visual style that could give messages more personality and meaning. However, my professional experience has taught me to be much more flexible and to understand that everyone has a different way of expressing themselves. I’ve learned that communication isn’t just about finding a creative approach, but also about adapting to each situation and audience. I feel happiest when I can help convey someone else’s ideas clearly and in a way that truly reflects what they want to communicate.

What do you actually do?

As a UNIgreen Communication Officer at the University of Almería, I help connect the university with UNIgreen. I create short videos about our activities, interview people involved in UNIgreen, manage social media and write news articles. I also take photographs at events, update the alliance’s website and design posters and flyers to promote activities. Alongside my colleague Habiba, I help plan new UNIgreen events at the university. My role combines creating content, sharing what we do with different audiences and helping students and staff discover the opportunities and activities that UNIgreen offers.

What are you passionate about?

My favourite part of the job is filming videos. I always wake up more excited on those days because I know I’ll meet new people, learn new things and have an enjoyable experience. I’m genuinely interested in what our interviewees have to say, especially when they’re experts in their fields. I love discovering interesting facts and sharing them with my friends. I also enjoy improvising shots and exploring the places where people work.

What would you like to change?

I would love to have the opportunity to visit other universities in the alliance and collaborate with their teams on content creation. One thing I miss from my previous job is having colleagues to take photos and film videos with. Sharing these experiences was very enriching, as we could exchange ideas, learn from each other and approach the same task from different perspectives. I think working more closely with colleagues from other UNIgreen universities would be a great way to develop new skills, discover different ways of working and create content together.

What does UNIgreen mean to you?

Professionally, being part of UNIgreen gives me the opportunity to work at a public university like UAL, alongside professionals I admire and respect, which makes me value my work and put a lot of care into everything I do. Personally, being part of this community is helping me become more organised, manage deadlines better and feel comfortable asking my colleagues for help whenever I face something I don’t know how to do.

What are you like when you’re not working?

Outside work, I love playing board games and video games with my friends. My favourite days are when we can all get together, even if it’s just on a call. Music is another big part of my life: I play some instruments, and lately, I’ve become really interested in flamenco and would love to learn to play the Spanish guitar.
