Bioeconomy has shown a proven potential to address the important challenges of climate change, sustainable production of food and non-food, efficient use of resources, and preservation of biodiversity and soil quality.
It is the part of the economy distinguishable by its use of renewable resources from agriculture, forestry and the marine to produce food, feed, materials and energy, while reducing waste in support of achieving a sustainable and climate neutral society. Sustainable and circular bioeconomy can drive the renewal of industries, give new opportunities to rural communities and modernise primary production systems.
The concepts of bioeconomy, agriculture and rural policy can contribute significantly to the transition towards a green economy, where economic activities are aligned with environmental sustainability and social well-being. Their integration into the UNIgreen Alliance goals will contribute to overall sustainability objectives, rural development, environmental conservation, and the promotion of practices that balance economic development with ecological integrity.
The JRC 6 ‘Bioeconomy, Agricultural and Rural Policy’ seeks to uncover the potential to strengthen further bioeconomy research and innovation, and increase research capacity for bioeconomy at the UNIgreen partner to share knowledge and exchange expertise in making the transition to bioeconomy research and innovation.
