People behind UNIgreen: Paula Ferreira

Could you briefly introduce yourself?

My name is Paula Ferreira and I am a researcher working in the field of biomaterials, focusing on the development of materials for biomedical applications. My work is driven by the goal of creating solutions that are not only effective but also sustainable. Alongside my academic activity, I am a co-founder of two start-ups, both guided by sustainability principles, particularly the reduction of solvent use, packaging, and waste. I am currently affiliated with my home institution, where I engage in research, teaching, and mentoring. Within UNIgreen, I contribute to initiatives that connect science, sustainability, innovation, and tech transfer.

Can you share a concrete way in which UNIgreen is having a positive impact?

One concrete way UNIgreen is making a positive impact is by creating real opportunities for collaboration across institutions that share a commitment to sustainability. In my experience, this has translated into stronger connections among researchers and more space for interdisciplinary work, especially in areas such as green materials and responsible innovation. What stands out to me is how the alliance encourages us to think beyond our local context and consider broader societal challenges. By promoting joint initiatives, mobility, and knowledge exchange, UNIgreen helps turn individual efforts into collective impact, accelerating the development of more sustainable solutions in both research and practice.

What’s a lesson you’ve learned from working with such a diverse and international team?

Working with such a diverse and international team has taught me that collaboration is equally about mindset and expertise. People bring different ways of thinking, shaped by their cultures, disciplines, and experiences, and this can initially feel challenging. However, I have learned that when we take the time to listen and understand each other, those differences become a source of creativity and innovation. It has reinforced the importance of clear communication and openness. This experience has shown me that the best ideas often emerge when we are willing to step outside our own perspectives and embrace diversity as a strength.

If UNIgreen were a plant, how would you describe it?

If UNIgreen were plants, I would describe them as a diverse ecosystem where different species grow together in balance. Each partner brings its own characteristics and strengths, like plants adapted to different environments, but all are connected by a shared purpose. What makes this ecosystem special is its resilience and ability to evolve, supported by collaboration and mutual growth. Some plants grow quickly and explore new directions, while others provide stability and structure. Together, they create a living system where ideas can take root, grow, and flourish sustainably.
