People behind UNIgreen: María Mañas

Could you briefly introduce yourself?

Hello! I am María Mañas and I study Environmental Sciences at the University of Almería. I have always been passionate about nature and deeply committed to protecting our planet and promoting sustainability.

I joined UNIgreen because I believe it is a very inspiring project where students can learn, grow, and collaborate to create a more sustainable future together. Being part of this initiative motivates me to keep learning and contributing to positive change every day.

Can you share a concrete way in which UNIgreen is having a positive impact?

From my point of view, the greatest impact of UNIgreen is its ability to connect people from different countries to work together toward a shared goal: building a sustainable and future-oriented European alliance.

It is truly inspiring to see how, despite speaking different languages and coming from different cultural backgrounds, we are able to cooperate, exchange ideas, and move in the same direction. UNIgreen creates opportunities for students to feel part of an international community committed to sustainability, innovation, and mutual understanding.

What’s a lesson you’ve learned from working with such a diverse and international team?

Working with such a diverse and international team has taught me the importance of openness and collaboration. Every person brings unique perspectives, experiences, and ideas, which makes teamwork much richer and more creative.

For me, it is a continuous learning experience and a refreshing opportunity to share opinions with people from different cultures. This diversity not only helps us grow professionally, but also personally, by teaching us empathy, communication, and the value of understanding others.

If UNIgreen were a plant, how would you describe it?

If UNIgreen were plants, I would describe it as a large and diverse ecosystem. In nature, an ecosystem only works properly when different species coexist, cooperate, and support each other. I think UNIgreen reflects that idea.

Each university, student, and professor brings different knowledge, experiences, and perspectives, just like every plant has its own function within an ecosystem. What I find most interesting is that diversity is not seen as a challenge, but as a strength. In the same way biodiversity makes ecosystems more resilient and adaptable, international collaboration makes projects like UNIgreen richer and more innovative.
